Wisdom and Proverbs
By Mary Jeppson
We have begun our Bible study of the book of James: Pearls for Wise Living. *“James was a relative of Jesus and one of the three key leaders of the church in that first generation (the other two were Peter and Paul).” He led the church in Jerusalem for more than ten years. He was an eyewitness of the Resurrection, presided over the Council of Jerusalem and was acknowledged by Paul as pillar of the community. He was not only a leader, but a man of wisdom. His teaching of the wisdom of the kingdom of God was a style reminiscent of Jesus himself.
What is wisdom? It is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. (CCC 1831). * “Wisdom should not be confused with knowledge, which has to do with the gathering of facts and information. Wisdom is more than head-knowledge, whether that knowledge comes from understanding or experience. Rather it is to apply that knowledge with common sense and insight.”
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all men generously and without reproaching, and it will be given him.” (James 1:5) A perfect example of this was when King Solomon asked for wisdom. “Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” (1 Kings 3:9) God was pleased when King Solomon did not ask for riches, a long life or the life of his enemies. But instead asked for understanding to discern what it right. And he was given a wise and discerning mind that no one before him or after him was given.
The most recommended way to seek wisdom today is to read the Bible daily. King Solomon put together a compendium of wisdom: the book of Proverbs. The book has thirty one chapters and can be read one chapter a day throughout the month. Let’s be wise with our time and start today! Pick the chapter with today’s date. Pray before you read and ask God to speak to you. Wisdom is there for the asking.
