Saint Henry

 

      On July 13th we celebrate the life of Saint Henry who was born in 972 in modern day Germany. His father was the Duke of Bavaria and his mother was the daughter of the King of Burgundy. Saint Henry received his education from Saint Wolfgang, bishop of Ratisbon. After his father’s death, in 995, Henry became the Duke of Bavaria. Furthermore, in 1002, he was elected emperor.

 

      Henry did everything for the greater glory of God. He cared for the welfare of the Church and the clergy. In 1014, he went to Rome to receive the imperial crown from Pope Benedict VIII. When the Saracens and Greeks invaded southern Italy, it was Henry who led an army against them and defeated them.

 

      Saint Henry was known especially for his generosity, his piety, and his humility. He died in 1024 and was canonized by Pope Eugene III in 1146.
