Saint’s Corner

St. Valentine

As anyone who is dating or married should know, February 14th we celebrate St. Valentine ’s Day. The commercialization of his memorial is far different from the historical accounts of him. St. Valentine lived in Rome and was a holy priest who worked to help Christians who faced martyrdom in the early Church during the persecution of Claudius II who was also known as Claudius the Goth.  St. Valentine was martyred when he was apprehended and brought before the prefect of Rome who ordered him to renounce his faith. When St. Valentine held firm to his faith, and refused to renounce it, he was beaten with clubs and beheaded on February 14th in either the year 269 or 270 A.D.
