Saint’s Corner

St. Andrew

Saint Andrew was raised in the town of Bethsaida in Galilee on the edge of Lake Genesareth. His father was a fisherman named Jona and his brother was Simon Peter. Scripture tells us that Andrew had a house in Capernaum and that Jesus visited it. Andrew became a disciple of John the Baptist and witnessed the baptism of Jesus. From that moment onward he began to follow Jesus as his disciple. As such, Saint Andrew is known as the first disciple with all four Gospels listing his name first in the order. Andrew then went to get his brother Simon and introduced him to Jesus as well.

Tradition tells us that Andrew had a vision which encouraged him to tell John to write his Gospel. Saint Andrew appears to have traveled quite a bit before his death. However, the records are not exactly clear but many listing Greece as his latter home. Saint Andrew is believed to have been martyred by being tied to an X-shaped cross where he preached for two days before dying. His feast day is November 30th.
