St. Nicholas
On December 6th, we celebrate the feast day of St. Nicholas. He was born in Asia Minor (modern day southwestern Turkey) and is credited with performing several miracles during his life. He lived a very holy life, including fasting on Wednesdays and Fridays. He was left with a sizable inheritance when his parents died while he was a young man and decided to devote his money to doing charitable works. It was in giving away his money to those in need that St. Nicholas became the first “Santa Claus.” Later in life, he was named the Bishop of Myra. As bishop, he was directly responsible for saving three innocent men from being put to death. St. Nicholas died in the year 346 in Myra. St. Nicholas is the patron-saint of many countries as well as of children, bakers, and maidens.
