Saint’s Corner - St. Dominic

St. Dominic was born around the year 1170 at Calaruega, in Castile. He was ordained a priest and began working in the cathedral of Osma. He devoted his early work to opposing the Albigenses who viewed the world in a dualistic fashion of good and evil with all matter being evil. In 1206 he founded a shelter for women who converted from Albigensianism, he educated them, and gave them a house for prayer.

However, this was not enough for Saint Dominic. He greatly desired to find and train zealous preachers in the Church. With the Pope’s permission, he chose the rule of St. Augustine and founded a new order devoted to preaching within the Church. He met Saint Francis and the two of them were instrumental in the revitalization of the Church. He preached far and wide before becoming ill and dying at the age of 52.
