St. Benedict Biscop

Benedict Biscop was born to a noble family in Northumbria (near modern day north east England). At the age of 25 he set out on a pilgrimage to Rome. Upon his return he dedicated himself to the study of the Bible and other holy exercises. Later, he traveled to the monastery of Lerins, where he became a monk. A few years later he traveled to Rome again and was ordered to accompany St. Theodore and St. Adrian to England.

During his travels he visited 19 monasteries to observe their rules and chose the best to use. Upon returning to his homeland, St. Benedict began building his first monastery made out of stone.  St. Benedict Biscop was known for his great holiness and devotion to prayer. Even during the last three years of his life in which he was mostly paralyzed from the waist down, he sought to pray the psalms with his monks. He died on January 12th, 690.
