St. Katharine Drexel

 

    On March 3rd we celebrate the life of Saint Katharine Drexel who was born into a wealthy family in 1858 in Philadelphia. She had a very special love for African and Native Americans and founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament to care for them. During her life, she opened mission schools and founded Xavier University in New Orleans. She dedicated her life and donated her family fortune of over $20 million to help cover the cost of caring for minorities. She died in 1955 and was canonized on October 1st, 2000.
