Why did God make me?

Why am I here?

By RH

This is one of the first questions in the Baltimore Catechism. The answer is, “God made us to show forth His goodness and to share with us His everlasting happiness in heaven.”

The next questions and answers are: “What must we do to gain the happiness of Heaven?” “To gain the happiness of heaven we must know, love and serve God in this world.” “From whom do we learn to know, love and serve God?” “ We learn to know, love and serve God from Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who teaches us through the Catholic Church.”

In the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in the Prologue, the first item is entitled “The Life of Man - To Know and Love God” and it goes on to explain our purpose and our relationship with God. If you have a Catechism of the Catholic Church, it is worth reading.

How are we getting to know God? God revealed Himself in Jesus. Are we reading the Bible, going to a Bible study, or spending time reading lives of the saints or the history of the Church? Once we get to know someone it is easier to love them. The love we have for God is so deep and lasting that we believe we will spend eternity with Him. Once you fall in love with someone, there is nothing that you wouldn’t do for that person. The lives of the martyrs proves their love for God.

One of the things that we, as lovers of God, are asked to do is to pass on the Faith. This means to everyone, even if it is by example. But, more specific, this means to our children. These little ones are on the same journey that we all are on - the journey through life to eternity. Are we teaching them about Jesus and His Church? Are we praying with them? We love them enough to take care of their earthly needs, do we love them enough to help them get to Heaven? Being parents is an awesome responsibility because it is not just for the here and now but for the future and beyond.
