Thankful for Our Father’s Love

By Steve Martin

Today, we set aside a special place in our heart for  Dads. We appreciate their many sacrifices and loving actions. We acknowledge what a blessing Dads are and spend the day being grateful. As we celebrate our human father and appreciate the gift of his care and providence in our life, it is good for us to reflect and be thankful for our Father in heaven.

God the Father created all that exists. Every good thing we have ever received comes to us as a gift.  Family, friends, good health, employment… the list for most of us could go on and on. We have so much to thank God for.

Sometimes we forget to be thankful for the greatest gift we have received, God himself. The Catechism points out, “By love, God has revealed himself and given himself to man.” God loves us so much he gives us his very life.

Look at a crucifix. Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, speaks loud and clear. He came to declare our Father’s great love for us. If the message of the cross had to be summarized in one word, that word would be love. That word of love is active. Once we truly hear it in a personal way our life changes.

The Gospel of John assures us, “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life (John 3:16).” Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with gratitude as we celebrate this Father’s day. Let’s be thankful for our Father’s love.
