The Reality of Hell

By Liz Wiskowski

There are some people, even some religions, that don’t believe in hell. When the question was put to me, “How can you believe that an all loving, all forgiving God could send anyone to the fires of hell for all eternity?” – This was my answer: He doesn’t! We do that all by ourselves. God gave us free will.

We pray in the Our Father “Thy will be done.” Then we miss Mass on Sunday because there is something else we would rather do. We view pornography, have abortions, and refuse to help the poor. We are full of pride and envy. In a thousand different ways, we sin and do our will, not the will of God.

God has given us every opportunity to turn our lives around. We have Reconciliation and the Eucharist. We can repent, be forgiven, and turn our lives toward God and do His will. He rejoices with each soul that returns to Him, and weeps for those that are lost. The choice is ours. God be with us all.

o         Did you know that Jesus spoke about Hell 28 times and eternal punishment about 90 times in the Gospels?

o         See the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs 1033-1037 for more information on the Church’s teaching on Hell.
