Calling all Teens

A Teenage perspective of ROOTS

By Jessica Sandberg

I am sure we are all quite familiar with the youth group called “ROOTS”. It is held about once a month or so, and is a time for teens of all ages to gather together and learn about Christ. Recently it has been decided that in order to get confirmed, you must

attend ROOTS at least 2 times per year. Despite this obligation, I still attend every month, or basically whenever ROOTS is held. I am seventeen years old, a senior in high school, well past my Confirmation,  but even with my “busy teenage social life” I still find the time to attend.

When ROOTS first started I was newly confirmed, and the obligation was not in place yet. All in all, I had no reason whatsoever to go. After nine years of C.C.D, the last thing any of us wanted to do was attend more religious classes. But after a little encouragement from my mother and Steve Martin, head of the youth and family ministry, I decided to attend my very first ROOTS gathering. To my surprise, it was nothing like C.C.D. ROOTS has a more relaxed structure, no bookwork or stress from classroom environments. ROOTS makes learning more enjoyable through movies, games, and group discussions.

After my first time at ROOTS, I decided to go back next month, only by my own choice. I like going because it helps me keep close to Christ. Many teenagers after Confirmation stop going to church and grow away from God.  I like to keep close to my faith by attending ROOTS. I go every chance I get, and I encourage you all to do the same. The gatherings are very enjoyable and educational… and as always, there will be free pizza and pop.
