Preparing to Enter Holy Week
By Mike Lambrecht
We are now well over halfway through the season of Lent. Next Sunday we begin Holy Week - named for the many days of great sanctity that we celebrate in preparation for Easter. Holy week begins with the celebration of Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. We read the passion narrative and are reminded of the great suffering and pain that Jesus endured for our salvation.
On Holy Thursday, we celebrate the Last
Supper - the first Mass. Every presiding priest throughout the world washes the
feet of 12 men in imitation of Christ's service to his apostles. On this day, at
the Cathedral in La Crosse, the Chrism oil that will be used throughout the
Diocese for the sacraments is also blessed and distributed to each parish.
Priests in attendance renew their devotion to Christ and to his Church.
On Good Friday we are given a chance to
reflect on the death of our Lord. We venerate the cross. This is the one day
throughout the year where no Masses are offered, only communion services. We are
approaching a most special time of year. Although attendance is not obligatory
on Holy Thursday or Good Friday, I would strongly recommend that you make every
effort to attend. These days celebrate some of the most central mysteries of our
faith. They are truly unique and a source of great grace in our lives. I hope to
see you there.
