Lent

By Liz Wiskowski

We all have our crosses to carry. Some are big and some are little. During this Lenten season, lets climb up on the cross with Jesus and join our crosses with his.

Lent is a sad time. There is nothing more cruel than the passion and death of Jesus. But it needn’t be depressing. We have his glorious resurrection to look forward to. Lent isn’t just about what we give up. Yes, fasting and almsgiving are good things to do, but we also can try to develop good habits. One thing that comes to mind is gratitude. We can find something good in almost any situation.

When the children are naughty or sassy, before you yell at them, take a moment to remind yourself how lucky you are to have them and how precious they are at times, and you will be able to reprimand them in a calm voice.

Is your spouse having a crabby day? Remember why you love him or her, and their good qualities, and you will be able to bite your tongue and not start an argument.

Did a new recipe flop? As you are preparing something else, remember the hungry and thank God for all the food we have.

Does a messy house upset you? As you are cleaning it up, think of the homeless and be grateful for a warm home.

At times does your job seem overwhelming or your co-workers impossible? Think of the many who don’t have jobs and do the very best that you can.

When someone is rude to you, or says something cruel, put your thoughts on all those who love you—family and friends.

If we can concentrate on all the good things we have and feel gratitude, not only will we be happier and healthier, but, we will be living closer to what God wants us to be.
