Around “TO IT”

By Mary Jeppson

I have this winter coat which I purchased before we moved to Wisconsin from Nebraska several years ago. It is a long navy coat which I wore to church and to other dress up events. As years have passed by, I began to notice the lining was wearing out but not the outside of the coat. I have had good intentions to replace the lining of this coat. However, I haven’t gotten around to it!

You may wonder why I’m sharing this story about the torn lining in my coat. It reminds me of how we can look good on the outside but we may be broken on the inside. Millions of dollars and hundreds of hours are spent to make us look good on the outside. We do our best to create a look which in turn may distract another from seeing what is really going on inside our hearts and souls.

We are at the beginning of Lent and thus still have time to start on our journey of spiritual renewal. Each of us knows what we feel inside and what we need to do to begin the healing process.  Lent gives us an opportunity to leave behind our old self and become who God intends us to be and a time to live in a spirit of true and deep conversion. It is through prayer and penance that we can heal our brokenness within. Now is the time we should get around to it!
