The Face of God

By Liz Wiskowski

Saint Augustine said, “I have this tremendous thirst to see the face of God.” We all have that thirst in one degree or another. That is why we sometimes feel so dissatisfied. We don’t realize what is missing in our life. We all share this desire to see Jesus – to know Him personally. Nothing can compare to the joy of being in His presence. He is present in our everyday affairs, if only we look for Him.

He is present in our tabernacles. He is close to us in the Sacrament of Confession. In our chapel, He is only a few feet away. After the priest’s words of consecration, let us receive communion with a great desire to see Him, know Him, love Him. In our homes and churches we have statues, crucifixes, and pictures of Jesus to remind us of His presence.

Not only do we want to see Jesus, He wants to see us. During His time on earth, He sough out the ignorant, the lame, the blind, the lepers, people from all walks of life. When we carry out the corporal works of mercy, and help the poor, visit the sick, talk to someone who is lonely or sad, let us see Jesus in each face. In fact, He is with us all along in the difficulties of our ordinary lives. Someday we will truly see “His face.”
