Life in this new year
By Rita Murdock
With wisdom, the Church has dedicated January 1 to the Blessed Virgin
Mary, the Mother of God. We need her model to live a life of holiness. This
year, resolve to turn to Mary when stress and anxiety overwhelm you. Her
gentleness reminds me there is still much to be thankful for.
Pontifical household preacher, Father Raniero Cantalamessa reminds us we are
called to “give birth” spiritually to Christ by conceiving new habits in the
Holy Spirit, seeking God’s graces, entering into a life of humility and
charity: “this new life must translate itself, without delay, into something
concrete, into a change, possibly even external and visible, in our life and in
our habits."
St. Francis of Assisi said, "We give birth to Him through holy works, which
should shine forth as an example for others. St. Bonaventure challenges us to
tear ourselves from old habits and be conceived anew in the Holy Spirit. Without
action and resolve, "Jesus is conceived, but he is not born. It will become one
of the many spiritual abortions." We need life in this New Year. Let’s pray
for each other: that we truly conceive and give birth to Jesus in us this year.
