Questions
By Liz Wiskowski
My children and grandchildren keep me on my toes with their questions. I have written down some of them, with my answers:
Why do we say Jesus Christ? Is Christ His middle name? The word Christ means Messiah-the savior (the anointed). So we pray to Jesus the Messiah, Jesus the Christ.1
Why did Jesus have to suffer so much? Jesus suffered for our sins and because of His great love for us. 2
Why do we pray the Holy Catholic Church? The Catholic Church is holy because it was founded by Jesus, who is all-holy. He gives us the power of the Holy Spirit so that we can become holy too.3
Why do we baptize babies? Baptism takes away original sin. At baptism the Holy Spirit is poured into the baby’s soul, so that with the help of parents and god-parents the child can grow in faith.4
How did God create man? God formed the first man from the dust of the earth. Then he breathed life into him and created a soul that will never die.5
When my children were small, one of them asked me a question for which I wrote the answer for him. I hope he still has his. “Mamma, did you see God today?”6
You asked if I’d seen
God today,
and I answered “no” with a smile.
Now I’m not sure I
answered correctly,
after thinking it over a while.
Who decided the sun
should rise in the east,
and slowly sink in the west?
Who designed an
intricate snow flake,
or taught a robin to build a nest?
Who said which seed
would produce a flower;
and which a stately tree?
It wasn’t a mere
mortal,
someone like you or me.
Who designed a pretty
seashell,
or the colors of a rainbow?
Who taught a fish how
to swim,
or a spider his web to sew?
Who decided you’d
have eyes of brown,
and your brother eyes of blue?
Yes, I’ve seen God
around me,
if you look, you will see Him too.
