The World We Live In
By Liz Wiskowski
The economic pressure and problems we live in have caused confusion, fear, and concern. The older generation remembers what a depression was like, and they start hoarding. Younger people just don’t understand what is happening and continue to use charge cards and buy whatever they want until they are too far in debt. There are people without jobs whose families are hungry, or they loose their home, causing worry and distress.
But, can we turn our attitudes around and look at this from a different perspective? Most of the people of Jesus’ time were poor, yet they followed Him and their faith grew. Let’s try to be more Christ-like. Instead of hoarding, we can give our surplus to a food pantry. Do we really need a vacation? Or, can we give that money to a mission or to help a seminarian? Our luxuries have become our necessities. Do we really need everything other people have, or can we use that money to feed a hungry family or give it to our church? Give away clothes that no longer fit. Someone needs them. If you have time on your hands, volunteer. Many organizations need help. Let’s try not to waste.
Let’s examine our priorities. Are we giving to God and our fellow man first? Or are we letting fear of the future make us self-centered?
If we live the way Jesus taught us, not only will we gain, but we will be teaching our families and our children what it is really like to be Christian. Let us use what we have to glorify God.
