Bringing People Back
By Liz Wiskowski
By listening to various speakers, by reading, and by talking to relatives, especially the young people, I have pondered why so many have lapsed in their Catholic faith. I don't have the answers. Many of us parents and grandparents are left feeling sad and guilty. But I do have some ideas on how to help bring them back.
Preaching doesn't help. They just tune us out. We have to let them see the peace and joy we find in our Church. Let people see the solace you receive when you visit the chapel, unburden yourself, and praise God. Let them feel the comfort you receive by being involved and by going to Mass, not because you have to, but because you want to. As you joyfully help in various Church activities, feeding the hungry, helping the poor, or visiting the sick, they will see Jesus working through you. Actions speak louder than words.
Of course, education plays a big part. For years we taught that the Catholic faith was a set of rules to live by, but we neglected to teach the simple joy and happiness that came from getting to know Jesus, and it all seemed very dry and boring to many.
We can do a lot in our churches. When you see a newcomer or a stranger, do you welcome them with a smile and a few words? Do you let them know that you are happy to see them?
Father Janusz, Mike, Steve, and many helpers, have started many programs here at Saint Therese for the young people, to let them know that their religion can be interesting and fun too. God bless them for their time and efforts.
We have breakfast after Masses, senior lunches, Friday luncheons during Lent, breakfast on first Fridays, and have started a pot-luck for anyone interested in adoration. These are all occasions to socialize and get to know fellow parishioners.
In a society that is so busy, it is important that all feel welcome and feel at home in our parish community, that we are a Church of warmth and friendship for all. Maybe then fewer will leave and more will come back home. I hope and pray that this is true.
